Willy Wonker: Not just for kids

3.5.16

A Second Serving reviews Willy Wonker Afternoon Tea at the Chesterfield Hotel, Mayfair...

An Oompa Loompa cupcake... a fizzy lifting cake... a cranberry flavoured popping candy drink... these were just some of the delights on offer when we stepped into the wonderful world of Willy Wonka at the Chesterfield Hotel. And while it might sound like a menu for kids, it really wasn't, in fact there weren't any children in sight on the busy Saturday afternoon that we visited. (Phew!)

Why go?

As I tucked into the themed finger sandwiches, chocolate dusted scones and desserts I was pleasantly surprised by the range and depth of flavours. While I've been to loads of different afternoon teas before, there were a few extra quirky twists with this one which made it quite different (I won't give any of the surprises away!) The portions were very generous, too. When the waiter asked if we wanted some extra sandwiches we said yes and got a whole new plate. We could only eat one or two more but ended up taking the rest home. Perfect! After a little persuasion I gave the specially blended chocolate tea a try too - it had a subtle flavour and wasn't too rich.

Downsides?

While the staff were top notch the service was a little on the slow side although it was busy when we visited.

Value for money?

At just £36.50 per person for a snazzy afternoon tea (with an extra twist!) you really can't go wrong. Add to your 'to do' list ASAP.

Location?

35 Charles Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 5EB
